Poll: Majority of Long Islanders support a new housing type
66% of Long Island’s young adults support microapartments
New York City’s first microapartment opened in 2016 with units ranging from 260 to 360 square feet. For a size comparison, a one-car garage is roughly the same size.
While it is far smaller than a typical apartment or studio, two-thirds of young adults on Long Island support such developments, according to a recent nextLI survey. Microapartments sometimes also exist as college-dormitory style rooms with a shared kitchen and living room space.
In fact, young adults on Long Island overwhelmingly support new housing developments across the board.

Mixed-use zones, microapartments, multi-family zones, home apartments – these are all developments that young adults want.
For Long Island to attract and retain young adults, and to encourage growth on Long Island, it might need to heed this and provide adequate, affordable housing stock.
