An update on Long Island commuting as normalcy returns

Let’s revisit what traffic was like pre-pandemic as pandemic restrictions are lifted and Long Island’s traffic ramps up in the coming months.

Census data from 2010 to 2019 shows that commute time to work on Long Island has steadily increased.

There has been a steady shift toward commuting 30 minutes or more, and a solid one out of five Long Islanders spends more than an hour commuting to work.

Another way that highlights this change is to look at the percentage change since 2010, in an indexed chart.

Comparatively, less than 10% of people nationally spend more than an hour commuting to work.
